Heights Varsity basketball this year is one of great talent and skill. The coach, former professional basketball player Thomas Treadwell, has pushed the program in a positive direction so far in his tenure. It is a hard thing to do when you must face schools that produce star-studded talents like Dematha, but the team is going forward, nevertheless. The team manager is senior Alex Barlow. The team is centered around the star junior and D1 hopeful Connor Venable, who is a big Georgetown fan. Connor had a sensational game against the Height’s biggest rival, Avalon, with the final score being 56-48. Another junior that has played well is Seamus Reagan, who also had an impact against Avalon. Seniors Seamus Walsh, Tommy Gross, Joe Balumuene, Pat Bowell, Jude Maloney, Leo Messenger, and John Wall do not all have the same impact and minutes, but they all contribute to the team, whether it is on the bench or on the court. The sophomores have a strong trio, with Eli Ephraim, Anthony Fountain, and Keaton Kley. The energy at home games this year has been intense, with Steven Weeldreyer, Greg Carosi, Finian Godfrey, and Senai Araya being the ones leading the charge. The team played vs. Our Lady of Good Counsel on Friday, January 21, at Capital One Arena in the District, home of the Washington Wizards. The team played well, but ultimately fell to Good Counsel, 68-58. Connor went off for 27, Reagan had 12, and Keaton Kley had 10. After the game, everyone who had gone to the high school game would get free access to pregame warmups of the NBA game later that night, between the Wizards and the Toronto Raptors. The game was close until Fred VanVleet hit a clutch three with one minute remaining, sealing the win for Toronto. Some of our players and student body had fun at both games, whether it was getting on the jumbotron, dunking on a professional NBA court, or getting to sit courtside for free. The season will end on February 18th, with the last home game being on Tuesday, February 15th, vs. John Paul the Great.
